Canada pushing for clean LNG technology
The Ministerial keynote address during Gastech Virtual Summit’s opening ceremony saw Canada’s Minister for Natural Resources, Honourable Seamus O’Regan, talk about how Canada is focusing on clean LNG technology.
“We understand the responsibilities we have to the world. All part of our commitment to exceed our 2030 climate targets and then reach net-zero emissions by 2050. So, we are using all of these assets to build the cleanest petroleum sector in the world,” said O’Regan.
He added: “The Canadian petroleum sector that is...by far...our country’s largest investor in the clean tech sector. Routinely accounting for more than 70 percent of all private-sector investment in R&D. More than US$1 billion every year. That includes making significant investments to electrify gas fields and reduce methane emissions. And leveraging our diverse energy assets to expand into new opportunities...such as hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewable natural gas.”
The Minister touched on how Canada is building one of the largest and cleanest LNG facilities of its kind.
“The $40-billion LNG Canada project will emit half the G-H-G emissions as those from similar facilities around the world. Other Canadian LNG projects plan to take environmental performance even further . . . such as the proposed Woodfibre facility, which would be fully electric and slash emissions by 90 per cent.”
O’Regan ended his Ministerial keynote by saying: “We are reviving our economy from the deep-freeze bought on by COVID-19. And we have to do it while continuing to innovate. Partnering with First Nations, Inuit and Metis. Building on Canada’s status as an attractive destination for investors. And working toward net-zero. And all of this while carefully managing an ongoing pandemic”
