Uganda, Total Reach Key Deal on $3.5 Billion Oil Pipeline
Uganda and French oil giant Total SA have reached an agreement for the construction of a $3.5 billion pipeline to the Tanzanian port of Tanga, unlocking the long delayed development of the region's largest crude reserves.
The deal witnessed by Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni and Patrick Pouyanné, Total's chief executive, in the lakeside city of Entebbe also allows the participation of Uganda's state oil company, Uganda National Oil Company in the 900-mile project.
The deal is a major boost for Uganda's efforts to develop its vast crude oil fields, estimated to contain as much as 6 billion barrels of crude. Commercialization has stalled for years due to lack of infrastructure facilities such as an export pipeline.
